OWFC Vets - Player Profile 2007-08

Salv Di Prima – Goalkeeper . Ex Fulham Youth player and very much 5th defender who never fails to keep defenders alert with his non-stop banter. Has kept us alive in many games. A fantastic shot stopper.

Darren Nicholls – Right back who loves to overlap and go for glory. ‘Shut the gates, Darren’s on an overlap’ is often the cry. Very quick & solid. Scored 4 goals this term.

Chris Willmott - Former Camberley Town ‘player of the year’ who also played for Egham and Bracknell Town of the Ryman’s League. Quiet but solid defender. Excellent in the air. Strikes a perfect ball. 5 goals this season.

Perry Hearn - Has adapted well to centre back this season. Listens well and keeps play simple. Spends most of the year in Florida but has returned to score essential tap-ins.

Dave Driver – adaptable full back and resourceful midfield player. Plays a careful and deceptive passing game. Dave loves and bases his play on Glen Hoddle. What now Eileen ?

Peter Cooper – Scorer of many a cross. Can kick a ball further than most people can see. Uses key body swerves to trick opponents. Pete’s goal at Chelsea was our saving grace.

Sean Woods – Ex Farnborough, Egham and Camberley ball player. Appearance for Camberley in the FA Cup 1st round at Brentford. Hants Senior Cup Winner. Sean is gifted, can play anywhere and is likely to create chances from nothing. Has captained the side for much of the season. Scorer of 5, ‘provider of many.

Mark Kuhn – Ex Entracht Frankfurt youth player. Played for Camberley Town and Bisley An important presence in our team. Calm under pressure. Luckily Mark returned to playing recently and has become a reliable member of the side. Plays a patient passing game. Dictates the pace of play along with Sean Woods.

Rudi Sewell – Prolific scorer. 18 goals last term. 26 already this season. Rudi gets goals and makes goals when there’s no obvious chance. Works terrifically hard. Wholly reliable. 100% positive attitude. Last season’s ‘Player of The Year’.

Dave Cowlard – 58 years young. He has played ,reffed and generally supported us all. The most determined and single minded member of the squad. Huge experience. Prolific goalscorer at Walton Casuals. Tough on himself at times. We simply could not have managed without Dave in our squad.

Martin Brown – Tenacious left side player whom we missed after he broke his arm at Tiffians in Nov. Returned recently v- Old Reigatians.

Simon Reynolds – Uncompromising midfield player. Very competitive and works relentlessly.

Richard Lewis – Despite spending long tiring hours away piloting 747s, Richard turns out seemingly fresh for us whenever possible. ‘Dogged selfless forward with good vision and a neat touch. Thanks for getting HOBs sorted out, Richard!

Paulo Perriera – Electric pace. Midfield / Forward. Scored a sensational goal v- Shene in the league. Broke his shoulder 3 days later. Returns after 6 months out.

John Land – The dizzy days of Chelsea and Fulham youth etc seem a million light years back now.. Some Referee-ing and FA Coaching followed spells playing at Walton & Hersham, Hampton etc. ‘even a Middlesex cap in there somewhere.. Managed at Camberley and Egham, then Combined Counties’ Ditton and Chobham. ‘Formerly a centre forward but left back in the changing rooms these days. Thank God for all those close seasons!

They also served… Special thanks to Michael and Flo Schwan, Steve Pearse, Ian Grainger, Mickey Hulse, Frankie Driver, Richard Woods, John Hughes, Brian Boughey, Geoff Mathis and Cliff Hill.

26th April v Halstead Old Boys..................Friendly

OWV 4 HOB 1..... For our final game a very sporting Halstead Old Boys were visitors to Loop Road, captained by our own, Richard Lewis, who had previously played in the all blue of HOBs. Rudi Sewell crowned another hardworking performance with two goals, one in each half took his total for the season to an impressive 28. Then a superb individual effort by Steve Pearse saw him take on four HOBs players before slotting home. Next came the probably the most popular goal of the afternoon scored by Dave Cowlard, who opened his account for the season by catching a defender in possession and neatly curving a left foot drive under the advance keeper. 3-0 at half-time and with No.4 following shortly after, Rudi Sewell then sent the keeper the wrong way after being put in from a superb move by Mark Kuhn and Steve Pearse but the shot cannoned off the post and away. HOBs tried resolutely to reply
and deservedly they scored through Richard Lewis, who had worked tirelessly throughout and was rewarded for ghosting past three tackles and clipping a shot into the corner. A thoroughly enjoyable game and a fitting finale for the 8ths. Congratulations to Halstead Old Boys for making a real game of it, to Rudi Sewell for being voted our ‘Player Of The Year’, and to all the players for the fantastic commitment they have shown and for the excellent example of camaraderie they have displayed for these past two seasons.

19th April v Kew Bon Viveurs ..................Friendly

OWV 3 KBV 4..... Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is probably the best summary of the second half debacle spectators witnessed in this, our penultimate fixture of the season against a much younger Kew side whose fitness and desire proved to be the telling difference. It had all started so promisingly with Darren Nicholls and Rudi Sewell giving us a two nil lead. Kew then scored from the spot after their big forward, who just happened to be wearing specs,
bundled into Darren Nicholls and fell heavily. Enter benevolent referee who was obviously a tad sorry for Kew at this stage. Little did he know.. Four substitutes later and we are much worse. Loss of shape and some pussy-foot defending result in three Kew goals. Steve Pearse works hard to notch our third. Rudi smashes a drive against the bar. Steve and Richard Lewis get seriously up ended in Kew’s ‘area but who’d be referee eh! Defeat hangs heavy..

12th April v Old Suttonians..................Friendly

OWV 5 Sutts 3..... With a number of players away on international duty, we needed to call on the fresh legs and enthusiasm of Vets from the 4th XI. That was the theory. 3-0 down after 30 mins was the reality, to an average Old Sutts XI. Although Rudi Sewell crashed a shot against the bar after only two minutes, and we somehow pulled it back to 3-2 by half time, there was no patience in our play until, man of the match, Mark Kurn, took 2nd half control. Mickey Hulse, eager to continue his goal glut, repeatedly shot on sight but mainly over the fence. Andy Russell scored the best strike of the game after Rudi Sewell had notched his 24th & 25th goals for the season. Mickey finally managed to add to his recent tally and Chris Motsy with Steve Pearse both contributed touches for goal no. 5. ‘Richards’ Lewis and Woods had busy 2nd halves along with Dave Cowlard who contributed important deft touches.
